Resources from George Chryssides
This page provides a Glossary of Buddhist terms, and the text of my book The Path of Buddhism.

Please remember, though, that The Path of Buddhism was not written as an undergraduate text, but for the lay reader. So you will need to read considerably more widely and in depth to complete your assignment.
Also, you should bear in mind that it was written in 1988, so it is not ‘state of the art’. Buddhism has moved on, scholarship has moved on, and I have also moved on! I thought I could do a ‘quick fix’ to update it, but this is not really possible. One key event which is not taken on board on account of the book’s age relates to chapter 9 (on Nichiren Buddhism). There was a major split in 1991 between the Japanese priesthood and the foreign lay practitioners, resulting in the formation of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) as the international lay movement. This probably does not impact on your study of this module, but anyone who wants to follow this up can find more details in my Exploring New Religions (London: Cassell, 1999), pages 214-223.
If I were writing the book again, I would place less emphasis on Buddhist monasticism and more on things Buddhism as it is practised in Asian countries - but this is a task for the future! In the meantime, I hope that The Path of Buddhism provides a reader-friendly way in to a complex religion.
